Professional Development
Experienced fishermen from the Cornish fleet achieve over 100 qualifications with us each year towards their Under 16.5m Skippers Tickets and Certificates of Competency.
We can advise you on the appropriate courses for your role on board and help find grant funding available to you to train and qualify.
Compulsory Courses for Experienced Fishermen
If you are an experienced fisherman, but new to working in the UK, you must complete the following course, regardless of whether you hold a Certificate of Competency.
This course must be completed within 24 months of starting in fishing. Fishermen from outside the UK must complete it before starting work on a UK vessel.
Experienced fishermen can apply for the Seafish Experienced Fisherman Photo ID Card once they have completed Safety Awareness training and been working for two years.
Download an Experienced Fisherman’s Photo ID Card Application form here.
Medical Fitness Certificate
In addition to your qualifications, all crew at sea for 72 hours or more or on vessels over 24m in length require medical fitness certificate (ENG1) from an MCA Approved Doctor. All fishing crews on all vessels now need medical certification (either ENG1 or ML5). (There is an Exemption for people previously fishing on under 10m vessel during 2021 to 2023. You need to apply for exemption before 27 March 2029)
