RYA Day Skipper Shore Based Course
This is an RYA course intended for anyone wishing to safely skipper a sailing or powered craft in the daytime around familiar waters. The skills and knowledge acquired will include assessing the conditions, the crew capacity, planning the trip and navigating safely throughout.
You should expect to spend around 40 hours covering all aspects of day sailing relating to tides; currents; weather and forecasting; regulations and rules and safety equipment. The syllabus covers planning a safe and rewarding trip and using navigation techniques.
You will receive a training pack and be led throughout by experienced tutors and your own practical exercises to make for an enjoyable and useful experience.
This course will equip candidates with the knowledge needed to work towards the Day Skipper Practical and you can speak to SCT about finding practical courses locally.
Course Content
- Information to use such as weather forecasts, tidal data and navigation to plan a passage.
- Regulations and an understanding of safety, collision avoidance, pollution and your responsibilities
- To enable trainees to plan a safe passage and navigate
- To provide the knowledge and techniques to help trainees through their Day Skipper Practical
Examination Type
There will be 40 hours of tutoring including two assessment papers.
There are no particular requirements of candidates for this course but some practical experience could help.
