Overview

STCW 2010 requires all seafarers to receive basic safety training or instruction in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training are contained within the Basic Safety Course

The components of BSTW are also a requirement for holders of a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean looking to work towards the MCA STCW Master Yacht 200GT (OOW 500GT). The training requirements also include masters and deck officers on workboats of over 24m and less than 500GT. 

The Basic Safety Course is made up of separate  courses which meet the minimum STCW 2010 familiarisation and basic safety training requirements.

They can be booked

as a single course of training over one week or booked individually. 

Although it is not a mandatory part of the basic safety training programme, we have included the Proficiency in Security Awareness course during this week at no extra cost.

What you’ll learn

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities 
A classroom-based course covering basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention, it also familiarises novices with the employment conditions and working environment on board. 

Personal Survival Techniques 
Teaches the actions to be taken by individuals to protect themselves in emergency situations and includes practical training using life jackets and inflatable life rafts. 

Elementary First Aid 
A combination of theory and practical training for basic first aid and life-saving skills. 

Proficiency in Security Awareness 
Providing knowledge, understanding and proficiency to personnel intending to work on ships who will not have any designated security duties.

Who is the course for?

These STCW courses are aimed at those looking to work at sea on vessels for the first time. Whether that be on Superyachts, passenger ship or on a workboat or merchant vessel. 

Course Information

To improve the survival opportunities following accidental immersion in water or vessel abandonment according to the principles established in STCW convention.

By the end of the training participants will:

  • Understand the principles of sea survival
  • Understand the correct application and usage of sea survival equipment
  • Be able to use sea survival equipment and apply practical survival skills.

The aim of the course is to introduce learners to the principles of first aid, so that they can safely assess and record the condition of casualties, effectively communicate the condition of casualties, and provide appropriate first aid until medical assistance can be obtained.

By the end of training candidates will be able to:

  • Safely approach and assess the condition of a casualty
  • Apply effective first aid
  • Perform effective CPR
  • Recognise life threatening conditions
  • Record the condition of a casualty on a Emergency Recording Chart
  • Communicate effectively with health professionals to obtain appropriate assistance

Proficiency in Security Awareness aims to provide new entrants to the maritime industry with the knowledge and understanding they require on the security of ships and port facilities. 

The course content is developed in line with the criteria developed by Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and approval by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Training is developed to meet the requirement of the international convention on standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

  • Know the importance of ship security and the roles of Seafarers
  • Understand the development of security codes and regulations, conventions and codes
  • Roles and responsibilities of the shop and a Port facility, as well as the Ships’ security Officer
  • Aware of the measures and processes for security and security plans
  • Understand security status, drills and exercises
  • Know how to recognise and report types of threats techniques and security measures
