Course Overview

The course provides training for those with duty to take charge of medical care on board ship or who have responsibility for medical equipment.

It is a required qualification by those responsible for or those who have designated duties to provide medical care on vessels operating more than 150 miles from a safe haven.

This course is a prerequisite for some Certificates of Competency for Deck and Engineering Officers for fishing and merchant vessels.

The training will be organised so that, by assessment and practical demonstration, trainees are able to show that they meet the outcomes and learning objectives required by the MNTB training course criteria.

Course Content

  • Casualty examination and assessment
  • First aid in the event of accident or illness on board
  • Examination, diagnosis and treatment of adult
  • Recognition and treatment of common medical conditions in respiratory, cardiac and abdominal systems
  • Recognition and knowledge of symptoms and treatment of life threatening situations including: drowning and asphyxia; cardiac arrest; fracture and other injuries; effects of heat and cold; burns and scalds; spinal injuries
  • Sources of reference information and resources for providing medical care
  • Use of medical equipment and medical stores and maintenance
  • Protection against infection and the spread of diseases
  • Procedures for evacuation of a patient
  • Procedure for Medical assistance by radio
  • Importance of monitoring and record keeping
  • Ongoing care and supervision on board

Practical and written exam

This course also requires:

  • Passport size photo with candidate’s name on the back
  • Be over the age of 16
  • Candidates should have a certificate for STCW 2010/95 :- either
  • Proficiency in Medical First Aid
  • Proficiency in Medical Care on Board
  • Updated Proficiency in Medical Care on Board

Certificates for similar courses or First Aid at Sea or the Ships Captains Medical achieved prior to the STCW95 will not meet the prerequisite requirement for this course

  • Certificates will be sent directly to candidates on completion of the exam.
